When a pope dies, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is actually removed and destroyed
Scenario
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The actions of Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the conclave in the film are true and accurate to Catholic belief and centuries of tradition. The Vatican actually officially announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal apartment is actually closed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with a wax papal seal. The college of cardinals is actually locked in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae, or House of Saint Martha in real life) to eat and sleep between votes.
And so there is no need
And finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections and voting take place, are actually darkened, closed, and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. It is reported that Ayendi will be the first African pope. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 AD), and Gelasius I (492-496 AD). Lawrence: Our faith is a living thing precisely because it goes hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery.
Greetings again from the darkness
Let us pray that God will give us a pope who doubts. And may He grant us a Pope who sins and begs forgiveness and who continues… Featured on The 7PM Project: Episode of 10 December 2024 (2024). Allegri: Miserere Performed by Capella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, Massimo PalombellaCourtesy of Deutsche Grammophon GMBH Under license from Universal Music Operations Ltd. It seems to me that it has been a while since we had an old-fashioned serious, tense, "big" drama film with big movie stars.
Ralph Fiennes delivers what may be his best performance yet
Well, that is exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh from his Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), offers in his latest. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) has adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is a welcome crowd pleaser that could earn some Oscar nods. And that’s something to say about the acclaimed actor, who has previously excelled in such films as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE CONSTANT GARDNER (2005), IN THE BRIGADE (2008), THE GREAT SPLASK (2018) ) and MENU (2022). His impressive career is only enhanced by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, burdened with the heavy burden of facilitating the titular conclave tasked with electing a new pope. As the film begins, the beloved pope has just passed away… and as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, these games are all about political maneuvering and power struggles and backstage promises.
Either way, Luciano Msmuati’s Cardinal Adivemi is the victim of Tremblay’s actions
Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, instead exposing the various iterations of loyalty during each subsequent secret (of course) vote. Within the cramped walls of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence’s time is mostly spent researching tips, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the immense egos of a few under consideration (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends he doesn’t want the job while campaigning as the ‘progressive’ voice the church needs right now. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most assertive, ambitious men who may or may not have intentionally undermined the work of another.
